-Weak-side

O1 passes to O3 then cuts to basket and posts-up.
O2 and O4 fill up.
O5 starts at the mid post area (somewhere between high and low).

Points of Emphasis
1) Guards start at elbows-extended-up past 3-point line (Guard Spot).
2) Players cut to basket on all "Down" passes (passes toward baseline).
3) Wing player does "V" cut   (see Progression A)
4) Cutter posts up aggressively

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
-Weak-side (Alternate entry - Dribble)
If O1 cannot pass the ball to O3 on the wing (eg. when "V"-Cut or Back-Cut has not worked), O1 has the option to dribble toward O3 waving him away from the wing position. This is why O1 must keep his dribble alive.
O3 will then post-up low.
O1 and O3 have effectively just change positions.

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
-Weak-side (cont.)
Reverse(Swing) the ball to Strong-side:
O3 passes to O2,
O2 passes to O4,
O1 runs the baseline to the strong side.
O5 slides down the lanes to screen for O1.
Now we're in the Strong-side play.
Points of Emphasis
On all "Up" or "Across" passes, either:
1) cut and replace yourself (see O3), or
2) screen away (see O2).
3) O1 has posted up low on the weak side. He waits for the pass from O2 to O4 before busting out behind the O5 screen.
Be especially careful with the pass from O2 to O4. Be aware of the defense.

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
- Strong-side
O1 pops-out behind O5's screen if continuing from the Weak-side play
-- OR --
O1 "V" cuts to 3-point line if O4 is initiating the offense.
O4 passes to O1 and screens away
O2 screens away for O3
O5 posts up low
O3 walks his defense down, then cuts off the two screens by O2 and O4 looking for a shot at the foul-line.
Points of Emphasis
When O1 receives the ball:
1) He squares up to the basket
2) Looks for the immediate jump shot
3) Looks to pass to O5, at the Low-Post
4) Looks to pass to O3 at foul-line.

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
- Strong-side (Alternate entry - Dribble)
If O4 cannot pass the ball to O1 on the wing, O4 has the option to dribble toward O1 waving him away from the wing position.
O1 will then clear out to the other side as O is already at the low-post position.
O2 and O3 will fill-up USING "V" CUTS.
O4 may be initiating the offense for the first time, in which case O1 has "V" cut to the 3-point line.
Alternatively, O4 may have received the ball off a swing from the Weak-side, in which case O1 is popping-out from behind O5's screen looking to receive the ball 15'-18' from the basket.

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
- Strong-side (Alternate entry - Stack)
O4 is initiating the offense for the first time on the Strong-side.
O5 starts at the mid to high post on the strong side and screens down for O1.
O1 cuts off O5's screen to receive the ball at the 3-point line.

4-Out, 2 Guard Front Motion
- Strong-side (cont.)
Ball reversal (Swing) to Weak-side play:
O3, O4 and O2 pop-out to help swing the ball.
O1 passes to O3
O3 (carefully) passes to O4
Now we're back in the Weak-side play (see Sequence 1)

PROGRESSION A -
"V"- Cut
** This is the most important movement in the offense. It initiates the offense. Without it, O1 must execute a dribble entry. **
O2 walks toward the basket, taking his man with him.
O1 keeps his dribble alive at the elbow-extended-up position from which we start the offense.
O2 executes a "Slash-and-Seal" at "X"
O2 cuts back to the juncture of the 3-point and foul-line-extended to receive pass.
O2 "squares up" and gives a shot fake.
Work on both sides.
Points of Emphasis
1) Timing
- Cut by O2 is done as O1 dribbles into the Guard Spot (elbow-extended-up).
2) Slash-and-Seal
- The inside arm and leg "slash" over the top of the defender thereby "seal"ing the defender behind the offense.
3) Target
- The cut back out to the wing is done at speed, giving a target with the outside hand.
4) Square-up
- As soon as O2 receives pass, he should "square up" to the basket. The pass should be caught so that the inside foot is the pivot foot (stride-stop).
5) Shot fake
- The player must look at the basket during shot fake to make his defensive player respect the move. Ball comes up to forehead level.
6) O2 should at least put one foot in the key and aim to receive the ball right on the 3-point line.

PROGRESSION B -
Back-Cut - #1
O1 dribbles into the elbow-extended-up position from which we initiate the offense.
O2 has begun his "V" cut (see Progression A).... however, O2's defensive man, D2 (the triangle), has overplayed to stop the pass to the wing.
O2 must cut-quickly to the basket.
Points of Emphasis
O2's movements:
1) executes a normal "V"cut,
- must touch the key then out and
- touch the 3-point line
2) then push off outside foot straight to the basket.
O1 should fake the pass to the wing then hit the cutter so no dribble is needed before shooting the lay-up.
Start with no defense, then progressively add defense for both offensive players.

PROGRESSION B -
Back-Cut - #2
O1 is filling-up in the offense, getting ready to swing the ball. However, his defensive man, D1, is overplaying the pass.
O2 should be able to see that the pass is not on if he is watching the defense.
O2 fakes the pass... this is a cue (if O1 is sleeping) for O1 to do a back cut if he has not already gone.
Points of Emphasis
O1's movements:
1) executes a shallow cut toward the foul-line to receive ball
2) pushes off outside foot straight to the basket.
3) O1 must have eye-contact with O2 before making cut "out" to receive ball.

PROGRESSION B -
Back-Cut - #3
O1 is filling-up in the offense, getting ready to swing the ball. However, his defensive man, D1, is overplaying the pass.
O2 should be able to see that the pass is not on if he is watching the defense.
O2 fakes the pass... this is a cue (if O1 is sleeping) for O1 to do a back cut if he has not already gone.
Points of Emphasis
O1's movements:
1) executes a "V" cut through the elbow to receive ball
2) At the 3-point line, O1 pushes off outside foot straight to the basket for pass.
3) O1 must have eye-contact with O2 before making cut "out" to receive ball....ie., we don't want O1 to cut too early. Timing is important.

PROGRESSION C -
Perimeter moves from Wing - 2-on-0
O1 passes to O2, who has completed a "V" cut (Slash-and-Seal), and cuts to the basket himself.
O2 must catch the ball either :
- at the 3-point & foul-line-extended juncture (start of offense)
- or 15' - 18' feet from the basket (after ball reversal).
O2 must pivot, turn and face the basket in a triple-threat position in either case.
Offensive moves from 15'-18' :
1. - Immediate Jump-Shot (required for all players)
2. - Shot fake followed by jump-shot
3. - Shot fake followed by one-bounce driving lay-up - depends on pivot foot :
3.1 - Crossover step - Left & Right
3.2 - On-Side step - Left & Right
4. - Shot fake followed by a one-bounce drive and pull-up jump-shot - depends on pivot foot:
4.1 - Crossover step - Left & Right
4.2 - On-Side step - Left & Right
5. - Shot fake followed by pass to O1 for lay-up or post-up.
Points of Emphasis
1) O2's "V" cut (see Progression A)
2) O1 feints and cuts to the basket
3) Target hand (both cuts)
4) Square-up to the basket on the wing
5) Immediate look & fake at the basket
6) Strive for perfect execution of moves

PROGRESSION C -
Perimeter moves from Wing - 1-on-1
In junior basketball, O2 frequently gets tied-up on the wing by the defense after receiving the pass.
Here, D1 puts immediate pressure on O2 after he receives the pass from O1. D1 tries to either steal the ball out of O2's hands or tie him up.
We want O2 to keep the ball away from D1 for the count of four, then explode to the basket.
Points of Emphasis
1) O2 must square-up immediately he receives the ball.
2) O2 has two strategies to keep the ball away from the defense.
2.1 - swing the ball low across in front of the defender only inches off the ground (defender invariably doesn't get low enough and slaps the wrists)
2.2 - swing the ball from one hip to the other quickly and powerfully.

PROGRESSION D -
Low Post Moves
O5 posts low either:
1) cutting from the Guard Spot (Weak-Side Play), or
2) as the post player sliding down the lane (Strong-Side Play).
O2 gives a pass fake then a good one-hand push pass into the post.
O2 then either :
1) cuts to the basket or
2) cuts to the baseline for jump-shot.
Teach O2 that he can improve his passing angle in many cases if he slowly dribbles abound the 3-point arc toward the baseline.
Practice from both sides.
O5 progresses through the following offensive moves:
- Pivot, Turnaround jump-shot
- Jab fake (using head and shoulders) one way, pivot and Turnaround jump-shot the other.
- Pivot to face basket, fake shot, step-through lay-up
- Power lay-up using one-bounce and drop step.
- Pass to cutter.
Points of Emphasis
1) One-hand push-pass from wing.
2) Post player gives a target hand. Post player must control the pass to the target hand initially, then quickly bring the ball under the chin. The other arm is bent at right-angles parallel with the floor. The elbow is held firmly on the defensive player to keep him out initially. The hand on this arm is out to help control the ball as it is brought under the chin. With the ball under the chin, both elbows are out to protect the ball.
3) Post player receives the ball mid to low post area.
4) Strive for perfect execution of moves.

PROGRESSION D -
Low Post - Strong-Side Stack
O5 starts high and screens low for O2.
O2 fakes inside, pushes off inside foot and "V" cuts to the wing.
O5 posts-up low.
O2 passes to O5.
Points of Emphasis
O2 and O5 should brush shoulders on the screen.
See previous "Progression D - Low Post Moves".

PROGRESSION E -
Moving Without the Ball - 2-on-0
O2 starts at the wing position and cuts through the elbow to the Guard Spot.
O1 start at the weak-side low-post. Upon pass from (C)oach, cuts to the strong side behind the screen for a jump shot from 15'-18'.
Points of Emphasis
O2 must:
1) Show target hand while cutting
2) Fake pass inside before passing to O1
O1 must:
1) Show target hand while cutting
2) Square up upon receiving pass.
3) Go through Progression C - Perimeter moves from wing.

PROGRESSION F -
Pass and Screen Away - 3-on-0
I like for each drill to start with the ball being dribbled to the Guard Spot. That way the wing can practise the timing of the "V" cut.
O1 dribbles to Guard Spot, passes to O2 and screens away for O3.
O2 executes a Slash-and Seal "V" cut to receive the ball at the 3-point line.
O3 walks in toward basket watching the play develop, then cuts over the screen by O1.
O2 passes to O3 at foul-line.
O1 and O3 have effectively changed places, so you can have them run it again or swing over to the other side in a continuous motion.
Points of Emphasis
1) O2 doesn't cut until ball reaches Guard Spot.
2) O1 sets screen approximately on the far elbow.
3) Add defense one-at-a-time as you see fit until you can scrimmage 3-on-3.
